Water: God’s Gift for Life

Water: God’s Gift for Life, Abundance, and Provision

In the beginning, the Spirit of God hovered over the waters (Genesis 1:2). From the very start, water has symbolized both creation and transformation.

Without it, nothing grows, and nothing lives. With it, life flourishes.

Permaculture teaches us to see water not only as a commodity, but as a sacred gift to be captured, stored, and shared. It’s not something we control, it is something that we can direct, collect, and collaborate with.

God designed the earth as a closed system, designed with natural systems within it, to manage water through forests, wetlands, and to feed and support healthy soils in order to promote and sustain life.

When we follow His patterns, we work with His creation, rather than against it.

Too often, we allow water to rush off of our land, taking valuable topsoil and nutrients along with it.

But, what if we slowed it down?

Permaculture uses techniques such as utilizing swales, rain gardens, and mulch to draw and drink water deeply into the earth rather than allowing it escape.

This mirrors the way God flows in His mercy. He does not meet us with floods, but with gentle rains that both restore, and replenish.

Jesus said, “Whoever believes in me as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:38).

“Living water” is a term used in Scripture to describe the Holy Spirit.

As we harvest rain and utilize it to restore the land’s hydrology, we are reminded that the Spirit also seeks to fill and overflow from within us.

The way we manage water on our land reflects the posture of our hearts toward God’s provision.

Do we waste what God gives us? Or do we steward it with care?

This week, I want you to take time to observe how water moves across your land.

Where does it run off?

Where does it puddle up?

God is inviting you to become your “water’s keeper” a steward of His life-giving provision and care.

This Weeks Call to Action:
Try placing a rain barrel beneath a roofline gutter, or, dig a simple swale along a slope of your land to retain water to replenish the soil, and to provide life giving water for your thirsty plants.

As you do this, reflect upon on how the Holy Spirit flows, and works His way in and through your own life.

Are you creating room for His presence to dwell deeply?

Because when you do, you’ll also become a wellspring of life!
